Lots going on at College Avenue

College Avenue Secondary School, what are you up to now?

November 11 is a day of remembering -- exactly what CASS did this Veterans' Week.

College Avenue's Writers' Craftclass organized and put together a Remembrance Day assembly with many contributions. The well-known 'In Flanders Fields" poem, accompanied by images of Canadians at war selected by Media Literacy students, was recited as well as a poem called "Dolce et Decorum Est," which helped us understand the soldier's fears they faced during the Second World War.

Not only were there poems, we also got to hear what some letters would sound like from soldiers who sent them home to their families.

CASS got to learn about war brides, hear Benjamin Britten's "War Requiem," even learning about Harry Patch, the last British First World War veteran who lived to be 111.

What made the assembly extraordinary was we had the honour to welcome back former graduate Greg Yeoman, who has served our country in Afghanistan on the front lines. He shared some of his experiences, along with pictures in the form of a slide show. It will be an assembly that will always be remembered.

Basketball season is back at CASS. The was a great turnout during the first day of tryouts. Everyone was charged up and nearly 40 players showed up, with an even number of juniors and seniors. When asked how this year is going to turn out, one of the coaches said, "The seniors will be a competitive team this year."

With perseverance, both teams will do great. Looking good boys.

Speaking of looking good, CASS is getting ready to dress up for the annual appearance of the CASS float during the Santa Claus Parade on Saturday, Nov. 21, at 6 p.m. Make sure to come out to support CASS and all the other floats that will be attending, as it will be the best year yet.

Bringing a food donation to the parade will help the local Salvation Army Food Bank. After the success of the Coffee House, CASS will have another Talent Show this year. If you are interested in auditioning be sure to come tryout and prove you have got talent.

The Save the Net Campaign is an ongoing fundraiser at CASS, to try to spread the word of malaria in majority-world countries, especially in Africa. CASS will be raising money to buy anti-mosquito nets for these families and children who are unfortunate enough to live in areas infested with malaria-carrying mosquitoes. If we raise enough money, CBC's Rick Mercer will be coming to CASS to interview students and feature the school.

On Dec. 10, CASS students are going to view the Art Gallery of Ontario including the "Come Party with the Pharoahs" especially King Tut, high fashion in the EdwardSteichan exhibit as well as the permanent collections and the new gallery renovations by famed Canadian architect Frank Gehry. King Tut hasn't been in Canada for over 35 years so it will certainly be a fantastic trip for the students.
