A 50-year-old Ingersoll woman was struck and killed by a VIA passenger train while walking near the tracks Friday evening.
The incident occurred at 7 p.m. on the CN tracks just west of the VIA station off of Thames Street.
"She was apparently walking her dogs," OPP Const. Troy Carlson said.
The dogs survived the incident.
Police secured the scene for several hours while the OPP Forensic Identification Unit and the coroner investigated.
Ingersoll firefighters were also called in to assist at the scene.
The tracks were closed and the westbound VIA train that struck the woman was stopped in Ingersoll until the investigation was concluded.
Passengers on the train were transferred to buses at about 11 p.m. There was no word on whether they would be offered counselling.
"Certainly it'd be a very traumatic event for the engineer or whoever was up front," Carlson said.
Track speed where the incident occurred is listed at 130 kilometres per hour.
The woman's name was not released pending notification of her family.
